Learn a New Language Online — Before Your Overseas Move

By

When you imagine a different life for yourself overseas, do you hear yourself speaking English, or do you visualize yourself conversing with the local people in their own tongue? Should you learn a new language when you move? That’s a question only you can answer, and that answer will depend on several factors. What kind of expat are you? If you're a cultural or missionary-type expat, deciding to learn the language will feel like a no-brainer to you. Will your work require it? Will you live …

Imagine Yourself with a Different Life

By

Recently I wrote about chipping away at your stuff to free yourself for your untethered expat life. This presumes you're like most other readers of this website, and you're choosing your own expat destination, not being sent on an overseas assignment by a company. Just as you need to inventory and make decisions about material possessions, you need to decide what’s important to you after you move. This is a place where you can dream a bit, and envision the way you’d really like your life to …

An Antidote to Doom and Gloom

Occasionally I reprint articles here that appeared on other expat websites. This one struck a chord with me, and I hope it will with you too. Thanks to Live and Invest Overseas, where you can read the original in its entirety. "Vicki and I recently returned to Argentina after a six-month absence," writes Intrepid Correspondent Paul Terhorst. "The seasons are reversed here, and, like the song says, spring is 'bustin' out all over.' We see new leaves on trees, migrant birds returning, more …

More on Getting Rid of Stuff

By

The battle to whittle down our stuff continues. . . I've posted before about our efforts to sell off the household items, furniture and furnishings that we don't want to move abroad with. (You can see some of those posts here, here and here. (And no, that's not my stuff in the picture.) Unfortunately, in this economy, there are way too many people selling and way too few people buying. I've recently posted ads on Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace trying to sell more of our stuff. I'm …
